Chapter 12 Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution

The first video of this chapter goes over the general mechanism for electrophilic aromatic substitution.  This is a continuation of where we picked up from chapter 11 concerning reactions of arenes/aromatic compounds.

This second video is a brief tutorial concerning how to use Friedel-Crafts acylation to avoid carbocation rearrangements.  These often occur if you do an ALKYLATION reaction with the Friedel-Crafts catalyst.

This third video explains regioselectivity and activity of electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction of aromatic compounds that already have a functional group attached to the benzene ring.  This is an important concept.

This video goes into more explanation into o/p- and m-directing groups.  It also works out specific examples in how to determine the major product of the reaction when you have more than one functional group already attached to the benzene ring.  You MUST know how to do this.
