Amines...the smell of death...literally?
Amines often have a "fishy" smell, as I referenced in class, but check out the link to the following amines and their common names:

Amines are used to "sweeten" natural gas by removing excess hydrogen sulfide that makes the gas "sour."

Cool, Stephanie. I had not heard of that!
ReplyDeleteNASA is currently investigating an vacuum-regenerated amine system to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the International Space Station, called the Amine Swingbed

Such an odd name...and it definitely doesn't look like what I'd perceive to be a "swingbed". The pic is on URL below.

Theobromine, technically an alkaloid, but a plant-isolated amine, is effective as a cough suppressant. This particular study claims it to be more successful than its familiar-type alkaloid, codeine.

Really interesting comparison.... I'm fine with anonymity, but you should email me personally your identity in order for me to accredit you with the extra credit.

Great job, everyone! As you can see, amines have a wide array of uses in "everyday" life.
ReplyDeleteAmines are used for urethane foam for furniture, to make shampoo, used in shaving creams and used in detergent among other uses.

I am interested in medicine so I researched amines that are involved with medicines. I came up with the amine called Chlorpheniramine. This amine is an antihistamine that controls colds and allergies.

In our last orgo class we started learning about some amines like "imine" and "enamine" and the roles they play in acid catalyzed reactions. There are primary, secondary, and tertiary amines. One of the most commonly found amines is ammonia. Ammonia can be found in household cleaners and is also an exceptional solvent in many reactions. I find it truly fascinating that amines have such varied uses. Simple changes in structure can make the difference between cough medicine and paint. Amines can be found in neurotransmitters which are necessary for nerve function in the body, however they can also be dangerous carcinogens. I would definitely like to learn as much as I can about this category of organic compounds.
ReplyDeleteAmines can be used as an anesthetics like Novocaine. Praise God for Novocaine so having my wisdom teeth removed was not such pain.
