Ch 5 Thermochemistry

The first video is an introduction of thermochemistry with a particular focus on the terms used.  We also go over potential energy and kinetic energy.

The second video discusses the law of the conservation of energy and how energy is transferred between objects.

The third video discusses enthalpy and using enthalpy in chemical reactions.  We also go over endothermic versus exothermic reactions.

This fourth and final "lecture" video discusses calorimetry, specific heat, and heat capacity.  In it, both types of calorimeter--a constant pressure calorimeter and a constant volume calorimeter (or "bomb" calorimeter--are discussed.

  1. On the last example problem, how did you find the heat capacity of the calorimeter? Thanks!

    1. That is a good question. I didn't do a good job in explaining that part. It was given; I just forgot to type it into the text of the sample problem. I verbally said that I looked it up, but I didn't explicitly have it written in the text. The heat capacity of the calorimeter would either be given to you or it would be determined by using a known sample with a known caloric amount so that it could be determined. In this instance here, it was given as a part of the problem.
