Amines...the smell of death...literally?

  9. Theobromine, technically an alkaloid, but a plant-isolated amine, is effective as a cough suppressant. This particular study claims it to be more successful than its familiar-type alkaloid, codeine.

  14. I am interested in medicine so I researched amines that are involved with medicines. I came up with the amine called Chlorpheniramine. This amine is an antihistamine that controls colds and allergies.

  15. In our last orgo class we started learning about some amines like "imine" and "enamine" and the roles they play in acid catalyzed reactions. There are primary, secondary, and tertiary amines. One of the most commonly found amines is ammonia. Ammonia can be found in household cleaners and is also an exceptional solvent in many reactions. I find it truly fascinating that amines have such varied uses. Simple changes in structure can make the difference between cough medicine and paint. Amines can be found in neurotransmitters which are necessary for nerve function in the body, however they can also be dangerous carcinogens. I would definitely like to learn as much as I can about this category of organic compounds.

  16. Amines can be used as an anesthetics like Novocaine. Praise God for Novocaine so having my wisdom teeth removed was not such pain.
